Description

Bobotov Kuk (Боботов кук, 2,522 m) is the iconic highest peak of the Durmitor massif in northern Montenegro and one of the best-known summits in the Dinaric Alps. It lies within Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, above the mountain town of Žabljak. Bobotov Kuk has long been called — and is still commonly described as — Montenegro's highest peak, although technically Zla Kolata (~2,534 m) on the Albanian border is slightly higher; Bobotov Kuk remains the most climbed peak and the one that most symbolises Durmitor. The landscape is dramatic karst: grey limestone walls, glacial valleys, and a string of mountain lakes nicknamed the 'mountain eyes' (gorske oči), including the popular Crno jezero (Black Lake) at its foot. The most common and shortest route starts from the Sedlo pass (~1,900 m) on the Žabljak–Trsa gravel road, climbs to the Velika Previja saddle, then tackles the steep final summit push — here permanently fixed steel cables serve as a handhold on rocky terrain, like a light via ferrata but without needing a harness. The longer classic route starts from Žabljak past Black Lake and the Lokvice shepherd huts.

Routes

Via celah Sedlo (rute standar, paling singkat)

Berat; scramble berbatu T3–T4 dengan segmen puncak terjal berkabel baja
12.00 km +730 m 5–6 jam pulang-pergi (~3 jam naik)

Because the Sedlo pass (~1,900 m) on the Žabljak–Trsa gravel road is the highest trailhead, this route has the least total ascent and is the most popular choice. The trail joins at the Velika Previja saddle, then the final 30–60 minute summit push on loose scree is secured by fixed steel cables (like a light via ferrata, no harness needed).

Route Segments

  1. 1

Celah Sedlo (~1.900 m) → pelana Velika Previja

    ⏱ 1,5–2 jam

Jalur bertanda melewati medan karst terbuka; titik temu beberapa rute

  2. 2

Velika Previja → Puncak Bobotov Kuk (2.522 m)

    ⏱ 30–60 menit 2.522 mdpl

Scree lepas terjal dengan kabel baja pengaman; bagian paling teknis

Via Žabljak — Crno jezero / Lokvice (klasik panjang)

Sangat berat; jalur panjang, sebagian samar, dengan segmen puncak berkabel yang sama
24.00 km +1200 m 8–10 jam pulang-pergi (~5 jam naik)

A much longer classic approach from the northeast, starting from the town of Žabljak past Crno jezero (Black Lake) and the Lokvice shepherd huts. The trail becomes faint in places, making navigation tricky. It finishes on the same cabled summit section as the Sedlo route. Good for those wanting a fuller experience exploring the Durmitor landscape.

Climbing Experiences

Bobotov Kuk is the most sought-after summit climb in Durmitor National Park, Montenegro. The most common and shortest route starts from the Sedlo pass (~1,900 m) on the Žabljak–Trsa gravel road, giving the least total ascent; the trails merge at the Velika Previja saddle before the steep final summit push with fixed steel cables for handholds. A much longer and more challenging classic alternative starts from the town of Žabljak past Crno jezero (Black Lake) and the Lokvice shepherd huts. Recurring experiences reported by hikers: dramatic karst scenery with limestone walls and mountain lakes, an adrenaline-pumping cabled summit section that needs no harness, and weather that can change fast.
