Description

The Black Tusk (2,319 m) is a striking pinnacle of black volcanic rock in Garibaldi Provincial Park, British Columbia, Canada — the eroded neck of an old stratovolcano. Its dark, fang-like spire is visible from great distances in all directions, most famously from the Sea-to-Sky Highway just south of Whistler, making it one of the best-known mountains in the Garibaldi Ranges of the Coast Mountains. It is known by the St'at'imcets (Lillooet) name Q̓elqámtensa ti Skenknápa and the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) name T'ákt'akmúten tl'a Ín7inyáx̱a7en. Geologically it belongs to the Garibaldi Volcanic Belt — a segment of the Canadian Cascade Arc — though it lies outside the geographic boundary of the Cascade Range. Most hikers ascend via the long trail from Rubble Creek past Garibaldi Lake and Taylor Meadows; only a few continue to the true summit through a dangerous, loose rock chimney.

Routes

Cerobong puncak sejati (summit chimney scramble)

Scramble eksposur tinggi pada batu vulkanik sangat lepas — berbahaya, hanya untuk yang berpengalaman
Tambahan beberapa jam dari kaki taring

The final section to Black Tusk's true summit via a chimney of weathered, loose black volcanic rock. High exposure and rockfall make it far more serious than the approach; fatal accidents have occurred. Recommended only for experienced climbers with sound risk judgement.

Via Rubble Creek — Garibaldi Lake / Taylor Meadows (hiking ke igir)

Menengah — hiking jarak jauh dengan kenaikan signifikan; sebagian jalur atas berpasir/berbatu
±1–2 hari (umumnya menginap; ~29 km PP dengan kenaikan besar)

The main and most popular approach. From the Rubble Creek trailhead the trail switchbacks up to Garibaldi Lake and/or Taylor Meadows, then climbs through meadows to the base of the Black Tusk spire. Many hikers stop at the ridge/base for the panorama without attempting the chimney. Well suited to an overnight stay at a permitted backcountry camp.

Climbing Experiences

Black Tusk experiences fall into two acts. The first is a long, scenic hike from Rubble Creek past Garibaldi Lake and/or Taylor Meadows to the base of the spire — many make it an overnight backpacking trip and praise the lake views and wildflower meadows. The second, reaching the true summit, is far more serious: climbers must ascend a chimney of weathered, very loose black volcanic rock with high exposure. Accounts stress both the extraordinary scenery and the genuine danger up high — rockfall and fatigue — so many stop at the ridge rather than push the chimney.
