Description

Big Almaty Peak — Bolshoy Almatinsky Pik in Russian, often shortened to 'BAP' — is a pyramid-shaped summit of about 3,680 m (many sources give 3,681 m) on the Zailiysky Alatau ridge of the Northern Tian Shan, only some 15 km from the city of Almaty. Its sharp profile is visible from nearly anywhere in the city on a clear day, and together with Big Almaty Lake (2,511 m) at its foot the area is Almaty's most popular day-hiking destination. Its slopes host the Tien Shan Astronomical Observatory, while at the Zhosalykezen Pass south of the summit stands the Soviet-era cosmic-ray research station known as the 'Cosmostation' (~3,300 m), commonly used as the launch point for the summit push. The climb requires no technical equipment, but with vehicle access to the lake reported closed, hikers must ascend from around 2,000 m, making for roughly 1,700 m of gain in a very long single day.

Routes

Jalur klasik: pos Edelweiss → pipa 'Truba' → Danau Almaty Besar → Kosmostantsiya → puncak

Berat namun non-teknis — 22–26 km pulang-pergi, kenaikan ±1.680 m, scrambling di scree bagian atas
12–15 jam (hari pendakian penuh, termasuk perjalanan darat)

The standard route starts near the Edelweiss checkpoint at about 2,000 m, a 30–40 minute drive from Almaty through the Big Almaty gorge. With the road to the lake reported closed to vehicles, hikers climb the steep water-pipeline trail ('Truba') for 1.5–2 hours to Big Almaty Lake at 2,511 m. From there a paved road passes the Tien Shan Astronomical Observatory to the Cosmostation at ~3,300 m (another 2–2.5 hours), followed by a final 2–3 hours of scrambling over scree and rock to the 3,680 m summit. No climbing equipment is needed, but high fitness and prior acclimatisation are strongly advised. A passport check takes place between the lake and the Cosmostation due to the nearby Kyrgyz border.

Varian Alma-Arasan / Prokhodnoye — Poliana Terra → puncak

Sulit — tanjakan tajam dan jalur lebih sepi dibanding rute pipa
Hari penuh; sering dijadikan lingkar dengan turun ke Danau Almaty Besar

A variant popular with local hikers climbs from the Alma-Arasan / Prokhodnoye gorge side via the Terra glade straight to the summit ridge, then descends to Big Almaty Lake as a loop. Local trail databases list several variants of widely differing length, from about 9 km for the 'via Terra' approach to 31–33 km for full loop versions, most rated difficult. The main season is June to September; outside it the upper slopes hold snow and require winter skills.

Climbing Experiences

Big Almaty Peak is one of Kazakhstan's most thoroughly documented day climbs — mostly in Russian, since it is effectively Almaty's home mountain. The clips below cover the usual variations: up the water-pipeline trail (Truba) past Big Almaty Lake to the Cosmostation, a solo line from Alma-Arasan via the Terra glade, and long loop versions running to several dozen kilometres. Written accounts add the hard numbers: a ~2,000 m start, roughly 1,680 m of total gain, and a 12–15 hour day.
