Best Season
Januari–April paling baik; Mei–Juli membawa hujan monsun barat daya
Permits & Rules
Kilometer pertama beraspal, sisanya jalan beton curam selebar satu kendaraan.
Hazards

Description

Bible Rock, or Bathalegala, is a flat-topped table mountain near Aranayake in Kegalle District and one of the most recognisable silhouettes from the Colombo–Kandy road. The English name is colonial: seen from the road the British built through the Kadugannawa pass, its shape suggests an open book on a lectern — an impression created by a long narrow summit ridge with steep cliffs at either end. Elevation figures differ: Wikipedia and Wikidata record 670 m, while almost every Sri Lankan source gives 797.7–798 m (2,618 ft), a mutually consistent figure adopted here. The Sinhala name has several folk etymologies, one from bata (rice), le (blood) and gala (rock), after a legend of a pot of rice turning blood-red. Its history matters: in the 16th–17th centuries, with the Portuguese holding the lowlands, the Sinhalese built a chain of watch posts on the most conspicuous peaks, and Bathalegala was the first. From its summit watchers could monitor the Kegalle valley and the Kadugannawa pass on the approach to Kandy, raising the alarm with bonfires relayed peak to peak as far as Bahirawakanda near Kandy. With Alagalla and Uthuwankanda it formed the natural defensive screen of the Kandyan Kingdom. The climb itself is short: a jungle footpath and stone steps, then an open rock slab with cut steps and a fixed wire handrail, roughly 30 minutes from the upper trailhead. The summit plateau holds an abandoned forest hermitage with a small stupa, shrine room and bell, a natural water pool, and a 360-degree panorama over Ambuluwawa, Alagalla, Asupini Ella and the Kadugannawa pass, with the Knuckles range visible on clear days.

Routes

This is the way nearly everyone goes up. The trailhead sits about 2–2.5 km above Hathgampola town on the narrow "Bathalegala road" — the first kilometre paved, the rest a steep single-vehicle-width concrete lane passable by a small car or tuk-tuk. From there the trail covers only about 400 m of walking for some 150 m of ascent. The terrain sequence: a narrow footpath through dense jungle, then stone-slab steps, then the part everyone remembers — an open rock slab with cut steps and a fixed wire handrail — before a few final steps and a path that can be slippery onto the summit plateau. No technical experience is needed, but the rock is genuinely slick when wet and there is no water on the trail or at the top. Mornings are best, both for the heat and for the risk of afternoon thunderstorms.

Many people stop where the trail tops out, but Bathalegala's summit is a long ridge worth walking. Taking the right-hand path, you cross flat grassy ground to an abandoned forest hermitage — a small stupa, shrine room and bell, remains of a monks' retreat, plus a cave — and continue to the southern viewpoint. From here the panorama opens all round to Samasara, Ora Kanda, Ambuluwawa, Alagalla, Kabaragala, the Asupini Ella falls and the Kadugannawa pass, with the Knuckles range visible on clear days. There is also a natural water pool on top and coarse grass sometimes grazed by cattle. The warning is simple but serious: the cliff edges on both sides of the ridge have no railing at all, there is no shade or water, and this summit is struck by lightning often, so head down as soon as storm cloud builds. This is also the area used for camping, including the popular full-moon campouts.

Naik penuh berjalan kaki dari desa/kuil Hathgampola

Sedang — tanjakan menerus sekitar 500 m sepanjang 3–3,5 km
±2 jam ke puncak dengan langkah santai

Rather than driving to the upper trailhead, some walkers do the whole thing on foot from Hathgampola town or its temple. That is roughly 3–3.5 km with about 500 m of ascent, around two hours at a relaxed pace. The character is a continuous, steadily steepening climb: tarred and concrete lane through Maana grass and rubber before joining the same forest trail and wired rock section. It makes sense if your vehicle cannot handle the narrow steep upper road, or if you want a hike that feels complete rather than just the final thirty minutes.

Climbing Experiences

Bible Rock is among the most heavily documented day hikes by Sri Lankan walkers, and most of the footage is in Sinhala. The tone is consistent: the climb is short and beginner-friendly, but the part everyone remembers is the open rock slab with cut steps and a fixed wire handrail before the trail tops out on the plateau. From the upper trailhead nearly every account gives 20–30 minutes; those who walk the whole way from Hathgampola village take around two hours. What gets the most attention is the summit itself — a flat grassy ridge with an abandoned forest hermitage holding a small stupa, shrine room and bell, plus a full circular panorama over Ambuluwawa, Alagalla, Asupini Ella and the Kadugannawa pass. The repeated warnings: the summit cliff edges have no railing at all, the rock is slippery when wet, there is no water on top, and the summit is struck by lightning often enough that going up in a thunderstorm is genuinely dangerous. Several accounts also record full-moon camping on the plateau, which has become an attraction in itself.
