Cuaca arktik yang cepat berubah, angin kencang, cornice tepi corrie, dan suhu jauh di bawah lembah. Kawasan ini juga dikenal lewat legenda 'Am Fear Liath Mòr' (Big Grey Man)
Description
Ben Macdui (1,309 m) is the second-highest mountain in Great Britain after Ben Nevis, and the highest peak of the Cairngorms in Scotland. Rather than a dramatic pointed summit, Ben Macdui is a broad dome in the middle of the Cairngorm plateau — a rolling, granite-strewn and very exposed expanse of arctic upland. The climb is not technically hard, but crossing this nearly featureless plateau demands excellent map-and-compass navigation, especially in cloud or snow, which here can arrive even outside winter. The most common route starts from the Cairngorm Mountain ski centre and is often combined with the summit of Cairn Gorm (1,245 m). The mountain carries a strong wilderness atmosphere and the famous legend of 'Am Fear Liath Mòr', the 'Big Grey Man' — a misty giant presence some walkers claim to have sensed on the plateau. The Cairngorms is Britain's largest national park and holds rare arctic-alpine habitats.

Routes
Dari Cairngorm Mountain (Coire Cas) via plateau
Non-teknis tetapi serius; menyeberangi plateau tinggi yang terbuka, navigasi wajibThe most common route, starting from the Cairngorm Mountain ski centre at Coire Cas. It climbs to the plateau rim (e.g. via Fiacaill a' Choire Cas or below the northern corries), then crosses the high Cairngorm expanse to the summit dome of Ben Macdui (1,309 m). Not technically hard, but the nearly featureless plateau demands careful compass-and-map navigation — very serious in cloud or snow.
SourceLintasan Cairn Gorm + Ben Macdui (dua Munro)
Non-teknis; jalur lebih panjang mencakup dua puncak, tetap menuntut navigasi plateauA popular variation combining the summits of Cairn Gorm (1,245 m) and Ben Macdui in one day. It adds distance and ascent but delivers two Munros and dramatic northern-corrie views. As with the main route, safety hinges on navigation across the open plateau and close attention to the weather.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Climbing Ben Macdui (1,309 m) most commonly starts from the Cairngorm Mountain ski centre at Coire Cas, often combined with the summit of Cairn Gorm (1,245 m) as a two-Munro round. It is not technically hard, but the route crosses the vast, exposed and nearly featureless Cairngorm plateau — so accurate map-and-compass navigation is the key skill, especially in cloud or snow. A longer alternative approaches from the south (Linn of Dee via Glen Derry). Many trip reports stress the arctic wilderness atmosphere, fast-changing weather, the importance of plateau navigation, and the 'Big Grey Man' (Am Fear Liath Mòr) legend attached to the mountain. Winter ascents demand ice axe, crampons and awareness of cornices.
