Description
Ben Macdhui (also spelled Ben Macdui, 3,001 m) is the highest mountain in South Africa's Eastern Cape province and the southernmost 3,000 m peak in all of Africa. Named after Ben Macdui in Scotland, it stands in the southern Drakensberg right on the Lesotho border, above the village of Rhodes and the Tiffindell ski resort — the only ski resort in South Africa. The track to its summit is also the highest mountain pass in South Africa, popular with 4x4 drivers, adventure motorcyclists and hikers. Ascents usually start from the Tiffindell/Rhodes area; while not technical, the altitude and high-mountain weather demand preparation: temperatures drop below freezing, snow falls in winter, and mist closes in fast. From the top, views sweep over the Eastern Cape highlands and the mountains of Lesotho.

Routes
Ben Macdhui Pass (via Tiffindell/Rhodes)
SedangThe main route is the Ben Macdhui Pass — the highest mountain pass in South Africa — climbing from the Tiffindell ski-resort area near Rhodes village to just below the 3,001 m summit. Popular with 4x4 and adventure motorcyclists; the top is reached by a short walk from the road's end. Requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle, readiness for high-altitude weather, and arranging access via the Tiffindell area.
