Description
Ben Lomond is a dolerite alpine plateau in northeastern Tasmania, Australia, about 60 km east of Launceston, whose high point, Legges Tor, reaches 1,572 metres — making it Tasmania's second-highest mountain after Mount Ossa. The area is protected as Ben Lomond National Park (proclaimed 1947) and is known for its dramatic dolerite cliffs and columns formed in the Jurassic, alpine heathland with more than 200 recorded plant species including endemics, and reliable winter snow that makes it one of Tasmania's main ski resorts. The plateau is reached by the steep switchback road known as Jacobs Ladder. The walk to Legges Tor usually starts from the Scout hut at Carr Villa (about 4.5 km one way, Grade 3, with much rock-hopping) or, more briefly, from the ski village. Other plateau features include Stacks Bluff (1,527 m) and outlying peaks such as Ragged Jack. Fast-changing weather and exposed terrain demand warm clothing and careful preparation year-round.

Routes
Carr Villa Track menuju Legges Tor
Grade 3 (sedang, banyak rock-hopping)The classic route from below: starting at the Scout hut at Carr Villa (about 900 m) and climbing roughly 4.5 km one way through forest then dolerite scree onto the plateau, before crossing the alpine tops to the summit of Legges Tor (1,572 m). Graded 3, with short steep sections and much rock-hopping. No special climbing permit is needed, only a Tasmania Parks Pass. Alpine weather changes fast — carry warm, waterproof clothing year-round.
SourceLegges Tor dari Desa Ski (rute pendek)
Sedang (jalur pendek di atas plateau)A much shorter route starting from the ski village area on the plateau (reached via the Jacobs Ladder road), following the dolerite tops with snow-pole markers to the summit of Legges Tor. Family-friendly in fair weather, but still exposed to wind and mist — the snow poles aid navigation when visibility drops.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Accounts of walking Ben Lomond consistently contrast its easy access with the harshness of its alpine weather. Many vlogs and trip reports highlight the switchback Jacobs Ladder road up to the plateau, then the relatively gentle but rock-hopping route to Legges Tor (1,572 m) across open dolerite. A recurring theme is fast-changing weather — from clear to mist, wind, even snow outside winter — reducing visibility to near zero and making the snow poles essential for navigation. Other accounts emphasise the colourful alpine heath, the wide summit panoramas on clear days, and how family-friendly the short route from the ski village is, while the Carr Villa track from below is far more demanding.
