Description

Batian (5,199 m) is the highest peak of the Mount Kenya massif and the highest point in Kenya. Unlike trek-accessible Point Lenana, Batian and its neighbour Nelion (5,188 m) are exposed magmatic plugs left after the ancient volcano's cone eroded away — reaching them is genuine alpine rock climbing. As a result, only a small number of people actually stand on Batian each year compared with the many thousands who visit the national park. Its first ascent was made by Halford John Mackinder with the Alpine guides César Ollier and Joseph Brocherel on 13 September 1899 via the south-east side. The most commonly climbed line today, the 'Normal Route', in fact climbs Nelion first, then crosses the Gate of the Mists — a narrow col around 5,144 m separating the two peaks, often iced over — before a few final pitches to Batian's summit. Another classic is the North Face Standard Route, opened by Arthur Firmin and P.H. Hicks in 1944, a direct multi-pitch line through couloirs, slabs, and chimneys. The name Batian honours Mbatian, a revered Maasai laibon (spiritual leader).

North Face Standard Route

A direct technical line to Batian: about 23 pitches over roughly 794 m through couloirs, gullies, slabs, and chimneys past Firmin's Tower, then along the ridge to Shipton's Notch and the summit. First climbed by Arthur Firmin and P.H. Hicks on 31 July 1944; descent is by double-rope rappels.
