Description
Barre des Écrins (4,102 m) is the highest summit of the Écrins massif in the French Alps, within Écrins National Park. The usual approach passes Pré de Madame Carle and Glacier Blanc to the Refuge des Écrins. The normal route climbs the north flank towards Brèche Lory, then follows the west ridge over Pic Lory to the summit. Nearby Dôme de Neige des Écrins is a separate objective: reaching that snow dome does not mean summiting the Barre. Glaciers, seracs, and a mixed rock-and-snow ridge make this a technical alpine climb.

Routes
Traversée Barre des Écrins — arête NE puis arête W
The traverse planned in the 2021 account climbed the north flank, crossed east to the northeast ridge, and descended the normal route via Brèche Lory. The source party abandoned the northeast section after encountering loose rock. This describes a route option, not a completed traverse or evidence of present safety.
SourceVoie normale — Glacier Blanc, Brèche Lory et arête W
From Pré de Madame Carle, the approach follows Glacier Blanc towards Refuge des Écrins. The normal route climbs the north flank towards Brèche Lory, where the Dôme and Barre routes separate, then follows the mixed summit ridge to the Barre.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Five videos and one climbing account provide complementary perspectives on the Barre and the Dôme. Distinguish a trip to Dôme de Neige from a successful Barre ascent; trip documentation does not replace checking current local conditions.
