Description

Auyán-tepui (about 2,450 m, a plateau of roughly 700 km²) is the largest tepui—an ancient sandstone table mountain—in Venezuela's Canaima National Park, and the birthplace of Angel Falls (Salto Ángel), the world's highest waterfall, which drops nearly a kilometre off the tepui's rim. In the Pemón language its name means 'Devil's Mountain'. Its flat summit is an almost otherworldly landscape of black rock, carnivorous plants, orchids, and tea-coloured rivers—among the oldest rock formations on Earth. Climbing Auyán-tepui is not a day hike but a remote multi-day trekking expedition: from Pemón villages such as Kamarata, Uruyén, or Kavac, parties cross savanna and rainforest, ford rivers, and ascend to the plateau with local guides and porters. Some expeditions combine the trek with a rappel beside Angel Falls. The area is also known through the story of pilot Jimmie Angel, whose plane became stranded on the summit in 1937.

Routes

Ascenso/Travesía dari Uruyén–Kamarata (ke puncak plateau)

Sangat berat — trek hutan hujan + plateau terpencil, butuh pemandu & porter Pemón
+1500 m ±8–9 hari ekspedisi

The main ascent: fly or boat in to the Uruyén or Kamarata valley, roughly two days climbing through rainforest to the tepui rim, then several days traversing the black-rock plateau to the summit. Maze-like terrain, rivers and fast-changing weather require experienced local guides and porters.

Varian Trek + Rappel Salto Ángel

Ekspedisi teknis — trek tepui digabung rappel dinding ±979 m
+1500 m ±14 hari ekspedisi (kerja tali teknis)

An advanced variant combining the Auyán-tepui trek with a staged rappel down the side of Angel Falls (~979 m) to the Churún River below. For teams with strenuous-trek experience and rope skills only; the window is operator-set, depending on water flow and weather.

Climbing Experiences

Auyán-tepui is not a day hike but a multi-day trekking expedition from Pemón villages (Kamarata/Uruyén/Kavac): crossing savanna and rainforest, fording rivers, then ascending to the black-rock plateau with guides and porters. Some expeditions combine it with a rappel beside Angel Falls (Salto Ángel), which drops ~979 m. The Spanish-language videos below document both the plateau trek and the tepui-wall rappels.
