Description

Åreskutan (1,420 m) is the iconic fjäll rising directly above the village of Åre in Jämtland, central Sweden. Modest by world standards, it dominates its surroundings because it stands almost alone above Lake Åresjön: the effective rise from the lake is roughly 1,048 metres, so its outline is visible for tens of kilometres. The name comes from Old Norse words meaning "peak" — literally "Åre's peak" — and local folklore ties it to the giant Rut i Skut. Geologically it is not volcanic but ancient bedrock displaying the layered structure typical of the Scandinavian mountains. Its limestone content supports an alpine flora unusually rich for the latitude, including mountain orchids, along with varied birdlife. Its position relative to the Atlantic and the Gulf Stream drives moist air up to freeze on the summit, and the mountain has a reputation as one of the windiest places in Sweden, with gusts recorded at 49–58 m/s during storm Ivar in December 2013. Åre has been a winter-sports centre since the 19th century, partly because the railway made it easy to reach, and is now Sweden's largest ski resort as well as a three-time host of the Alpine World Ski Championships (1954, 2007, 2019) and of the 1999 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships. Those who want the whole thing under their own power start from Åre torg on trail 214 (red), about 8 km and around 2.5 hours up, or trail 215 (black), a kilometre shorter but far steeper, passing Totthummeln and Lillskutan and usually taking 3–3.5 hours for the 1,000 metres of ascent. What makes Åreskutan memorable for most visitors is not technical difficulty but abrupt contrast. The lower section walks below the treeline and feels monotonous, then the landscape opens suddenly into stony tundra with a 360-degree panorama over the Åre valley, the lake and the surrounding fjäll. The weather can flip just as suddenly — from sun to fog and a cold wind that forces extra layers at the top. Hence the advice repeated in nearly every local guide: bring more clothing than you think you need.

The easiest way to the summit of Åreskutan without walking the full 1,000 m of ascent. The Kabinbanan leaves a base station at 421 m — reached on foot from Åre torg up a stone staircase, or by car via the E14/Kabinbanevägen to a two-level car park — and climbs 860 m to the top station at 1,274 m in just 7 minutes. In certain summer periods the VM8:an plus Gondolen combination serves as the alternative way to the upper zone. From the top station about 1.3 km remain on trail 217, a short but steep rocky stretch usually taking 25–45 minutes to the 1,420 m summit and Toppstugan. BaseCamp at the top station provides food and toilets. Tickets are bought through the SkiStar app or at the station, and summer opening hours change by period, so check first. Many hikers combine the options: up on foot via 214 or 215, then down by cable car to spare their knees.

The main and most popular line to the summit of Åreskutan. The route climbs past the Åre sign at Mörvikshummeln and the Konjakstenen, an ice-age boulder, before leaving the treeline for open tundra. The ground is a mix of rock slabs and gravel paths with some steep, narrow sections; ropes and railings assist on the hardest parts. It runs about 8 km with roughly 1,000 m of gain from the village, and the commonly reported time up is around 2.5 hours. The lower forested part is often called monotonous, while the upper stretch opens into a 360-degree panorama over the Åre valley and lake. At the top stands Toppstugan, Sweden's highest café, open while the lifts run. Snow patches often survive on the trail into July and August, and summit weather can differ sharply from the village, so spare clothing is essential.

Walkers who take it describe it as better sheltered from the wind than the western side, with views they rate as even finer, but they are clear that 215 is not suitable for small children. Many go up 214 and come down 215 — and repeatedly note that the descent feels steeper than remembered, so trekking poles and prepared knees pay off.
