Description
Arenal Volcano (1,670 m) is a near-perfect conical stratovolcano in Alajuela Province, Costa Rica, and the centerpiece of Arenal Volcano National Park. A major eruption in 1968 reawakened the long-dormant mountain and killed dozens; Arenal then stayed continuously active until around 2010 and is now in a closely monitored quiet phase. Its summit cone is off-limits to climbers, so hiking focuses on trails at the base—crossing the hardened lava fields left by the 1968 eruption and the surrounding rainforest. From the nearby town of La Fortuna, visitors explore the park's Sendero Las Coladas, the private Arenal 1968 reserve, and the Arenal Observatory Lodge trail network, all offering close-up views of the volcanic cone.

SourceClimbing Experiences
Arenal Volcano (1,670 m) in Costa Rica is hiked not to the summit—the cone is closed—but along trails at its base: the hardened 1968 lava fields in Arenal Volcano National Park, the private Arenal 1968 reserve, and the Arenal Observatory Lodge trail network, all from the town of La Fortuna. Experience videos show the relatively easy lava trails with close-up cone views, plus the neighboring Cerro Chato hike that is now closed.
