Description

The Amphitheatre is a crescent-shaped wall of basalt cliffs in the Northern Drakensberg (uKhahlamba), Royal Natal National Park, South Africa — about 5 km long and rising up to ~1,220 m from the valley to the Lesotho plateau. Its cliffs are Karoo flood basalts (Early Jurassic, ~183 million years) capping Clarens sandstone, so although the rock is volcanic it is not an active volcano. At its western end stands Sentinel Peak (~3,166 m) and above it the Mont-aux-Sources plateau (~3,282 m), source of the Tugela River which plunges over the Tugela Falls, one of the world's tallest waterfalls. The most popular ascent starts at the Sentinel car park, follows a contour path around the Sentinel, then climbs two vertical chain ladders onto the plateau rim, where hikers can walk to the lip of the Tugela Falls with sweeping Amphitheatre views. It is typically a ~10–14 km round-trip day hike: moderate in fitness but demanding a cool head on the chain ladders and exposed cliff edges.

Routes

Alternatif 'The Gully' (tanpa tangga rantai)

Sedang–berat (scramble batu)
1 hari

An alternative for those avoiding the chain ladders: scramble up a rocky gully near the ladders to reach the plateau rim. More physically demanding and requiring care with loose rock, but it avoids the exposed vertical section of the chain ladders.

Bermalam di plateau Amphitheatre / Mont-aux-Sources

Sedang, mandiri penuh
2 hari (bermalam)

An overnight version: ascend via the Sentinel route then camp on the Mont-aux-Sources plateau to enjoy sunset/sunrise on the Amphitheatre edge and explore farther toward the source of the Tugela River. Requires full self-supported logistics, water, and readiness for cold and high winds at altitude.

Sentinel Trail via Chain Ladders (ke atas Amphitheatre & Air Terjun Tugela)

Sedang, terpapar (tangga rantai vertikal)
12.00 km 1 hari (5–7 jam PP)

The most popular route onto the Amphitheatre. From the Sentinel car park, a contour path skirts Sentinel Peak with gradual climbing, then ascends two vertical chain ladders onto the plateau rim (~3,000 m). From the top, hikers walk to the lip of the Tugela Falls with Amphitheatre views. About 10–14 km round trip; moderate in fitness but demanding a cool head on the ladders and exposed cliff edges.
