- Country
- South Africa (ZA)
- Location / Range
- Amatola/Amathole Mountains, Great Escarpment, Provinsi Eastern Cape, Afrika Selatan (antara Stutterheim/King William's Town dan desa Hogsback)
- Mountain type
- Volcanic?
- No (non-volcanic)
- Coordinates

- Difficulty
Description
The Amatola (Amathole) Mountains are a forest-cloaked range in South Africa's Eastern Cape, running along the Great Escarpment between Stutterheim/King William's Town and the artists' village of Hogsback. The area is best known for the Amatola Trail — a roughly 100 km, six-day hutted trek often called one of South Africa's toughest. The traditional route runs from Maden Dam toward Hogsback through the indigenous Pirie and Malan forests, past waterfalls and natural pools, overnighting in five successive huts (Gwili Gwili, Dontsa, Cata, Mnyameni, Zingcuka). The highest point reached on the trail is Geju Peak at about 1,880 m, while the range's overall summit is around 1,963 m. At the western end, the cool, misty village of Hogsback offers far gentler day walks — such as to the Madonna and Child waterfall — so the area serves both long-distance trekkers and casual walkers.

Climbing Experiences
Accounts of hiking the Amatolas are dominated by the Amatola Trail — a six-day hutted trek often called South Africa's toughest — alongside gentler day walks around Hogsback. Videos and trip reports show dense Afromontane forest, steep slippery climbs, waterfalls and pools, the sequence of huts, and the cost and permit logistics.
