Description

Amatola, also written Amathole, is a mountain range in South Africa’s Eastern Cape with indigenous forest and upland grassland. Wikidata classifies it as a range rather than an individual peak; the 1,963 m elevation is associated with Gaika’s Kop in Wikipedia. The Amatola Trail links Maden Dam with the Hogsback area over six days and five hut nights. Shorter visits can use a two-day trip through Zingcuka or a forest walk to Madonna and Child Falls. The two-day option can still be very strenuous on the high route; Eco Trails also describes a lower bad-weather alternative.

Routes

Air Terjun Madonna and Child dari Hogsback

Sedang
~6 km pulang-pergi, ~4 jam

A far gentler day walk from Hogsback village to the Madonna and Child waterfall, through the cool, misty indigenous forest typical of the Amatolas — a popular alternative to the full six-day trek.

Eco Trails describes a two-day trip from Hogsback with an overnight stay at Zingcuka. The high option passes between Hog 1 and Hog 2 before joining the fifth-day trail; the source gives about 22 km for the first day, including exposed sections and a very steep descent. A lower alternative uses Auckland Nature Reserve and forestry roads in poor weather. Day two follows the final Amatola stage or returns by the lower route; the three-night package also includes accommodation before and after walking.

Climbing Experiences

Amatola accounts cover forests, waterfalls, long hut-to-hut days and route choices around Hogsback. Three additional written reports complement the videos with experiences of missed markers, rain and shorter trail variants. Older observations about hut facilities and costs should be read in the context of their travel dates.
