Description

Ajusco (about 3,930 m) is a volcanic lava dome at the south-western edge of Mexico City, in the Tlalpan borough, and is the highest point in the capital. Its name comes from the Nahuatl 'axōchco' — 'place where the water flowers'. It belongs to the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt and is protected as Cumbres del Ajusco National Park. Sitting right on the rim of a metropolis of millions, Ajusco is the most popular weekend hiking destination for Mexico City residents. Its two main summits are Pico del Águila (~3,880 m), the most frequently climbed and reached via a steep rocky trail, and Cruz del Marqués (~3,930 m), the true high point. On a clear day the summit reveals the Valley of Mexico and neighbouring peaks such as Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl; in winter the top is occasionally dusted with snow.

Routes

Cruz del Marqués (puncak tertinggi)

Sedang–menantang
≈5–6 jam pulang-pergi (lingkar ≈ 6 km)

The route to Cruz del Marqués (~3,930 m), the highest point of Ajusco and of Mexico City. Many hikers combine it with Pico del Águila in a single loop. The altitude above 3,900 m calls for light acclimatisation and awareness of fast-changing weather.

The most popular Ajusco route, heading to Pico del Águila (~3,880 m). The trail is rocky and fairly steep near the top, but can be completed in a few hours and suits beginner-to-intermediate hikers. The usual trailhead is along the Ajusco loop road (Carretera Picacho–Ajusco), in Cumbres del Ajusco National Park.

Climbing Experiences

As the highest point of Mexico City and easily reached from downtown, Ajusco is the capital's favourite 'training mountain'. Most experiences revolve around two summits: Pico del Águila (~3,880 m), the most popular and climbable in a few hours via a rocky trail, and Cruz del Marqués (~3,930 m), the true high point. Experience videos — many in Spanish from local hikers — show the route, the panorama of the Valley of Mexico from the top, sunrise moments above 3,900 m, and tips for beginners. There are also foreign-hiker perspectives highlighting just how close this summit sits to the bustle of Mexico City.
