Description

Abuye Meda (~4,000 m) is a plateau summit that forms the highest point of the Semien Shewa (North Shewa) Zone in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. It sits where three woredas meet—Gishe to the west, Antsokiyana Gemza to the north, and Efratana Gidim to the south—about 98 km north of Debre Berhan. It is hydrologically significant: its ridge marks the divide between the Abay (Blue Nile) and Awash river basins. This is not a sharp-peaked mountain but a rarely-trekked expanse of grassy Afro-alpine plateau. The most practical base is the town of Mehal Meda and the adjacent Menz-Guassa Community Conservation Area—one of Ethiopia's oldest community-based conservation schemes, famous for gelada monkeys and Afro-alpine moorland. Its appeal lies in remoteness, highland wildlife, and sweeping plateau landscapes.

Routes

Trek Dataran Tinggi Menz-Guassa → Abuye Meda

Sedang non-teknis (padang rumput Afro-alpin terbuka, ~4.000 m, terpencil)
2–4 hari (trek dataran tinggi dari Mehal Meda / Guassa; day-hike ke titik tertinggi bila bermalam dekat plateau)

There is no marked climbing trail to Abuye Meda; the most practical approach follows the Menz-Guassa highland trekking pattern. The logistical base is the town of Mehal Meda and the Guassa Community Conservation Area. From there the journey crosses open Afro-alpine grassland toward the Abuye Meda plateau ridge (~4,000 m) that divides the Abay and Awash basins. The terrain is rolling and grassy rather than technical; the main challenges are altitude, cold wind, remoteness, and the lack of waymarking—community guides are strongly advised. Gelada monkeys and highland wildlife are commonly seen en route.
