Description
Jabal Shams (3,009 m; Arabic: 'Mountain of the Sun') is the highest peak in Oman and one of the most spectacular trekking destinations in the Arabian Peninsula. It lies in the Western Hajar Mountains roughly 250 km south of Muscat and 80 km northwest of the historic city of Nizwa. The mountain's greatest draw is not just its elevation but the enormous Wadi Nakhr canyon yawning at its base — known as the 'Grand Canyon of Oman' — with depths of around 1,000 m and sheer vertical walls of striking limestone. The celebrated W6 'Balcony Walk', a roughly 9.5 km out-and-back trail, runs along the canyon rim past traditional villages, including the partly abandoned Sab Bani Khamis perched dramatically at the cliff's edge. Near the summit plateau sits the village of Al Akhdar (Hadash), where visitors camp under exceptionally clear skies. Jabal Shams is open year-round but most rewarding October–April when temperatures are comfortable.
Routes
Pendakian Puncak Jabal Shams (3.009 m) — rute summit
Sedang–berat (jalur tidak selalu bertanda jelas; medan berbatu; pemandu atau GPS sangat dianjurkan)Reaching the true summit of Jabal Shams at 3,009 m is a different experience from the Balcony Walk — quieter, less well-marked, and more demanding. A paved road (or 4WD track) from Al Hamra or Nizwa brings visitors to the plateau around the village of Al Akhdar at roughly 2,000+ m. From here, the summit ascent crosses rocky terrain, open hillsides, and limestone formations. There is no formally marked trail; a local guide or GPS is strongly recommended. The summit offers 360° views across the Hajar Mountains and, on clear days, out toward the Omani lowlands.
